Welcome to Madison

Madison’s early settlers were drawn to the town for its prime location on the Morris and Essex train line back in 1838, and many city dwellers find the location just as appealing today with a train ride to New York City taking just about an hour. Madison prides itself on close-knit community where neighbors help neighbors, parades are appreciated and a love for volunteerism permeates among many of its 17,000 residents.

Nicknamed The Rose City, Madison was once a large flower producer. Today it’s said to resemble a movie set and is often compared to a New England town—occasionally even playing one in film.

Area homes range in architectural styles that include colonial, lovely Victorians and sprawling brick structures from the 1950s and 1960s. No matter what kind of home you live in, you will likely make use of the popular community pool.

In the business district you will find the iconic downtown clock and Museum of Early Trades & Crafts on Main Street, more than 50 buildings on the New Jersey and national registers of historic places, trendy boutiques and antique stores, multicultural restaurants and live performances at Shanghai Jazz.

Annual events include the Taste of Madison food festival that benefits several non-profits in the community, and Bottle Hill Day to promote the business district.

Madison boasts three colleges—Fairleigh Dickinson University, the College of Saint Elizabeth and Drew University, which features a 186-acre heavily wooded campus. Drew is home to the The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, one of the nation’s leading Shakespeare theatres, serving around 75,000 guests annually.

Throughout the 4-square miles that make up Madison, green spaces and recreation fields are plentiful. Residents can also shop at the farmers market and spend time in the community garden.
