Welcome to Summit

Perched on a ridge at the foot of the Watchung Mountains, Summit is a tree-dense, 6-square-mile city with 22,000 residents and a small-town appeal. The commute to New York City is around 40 minutes.

Socializing with neighbors is the norm—foodies connect over international and local delights, families and friends window-shop at downtown boutiques and sample fresh produce at the farmers market. Residents are treated to a lively arts scene, community centers for every age group, athletic facilities and placid green spaces. And celebratory events include the annual 4th of July festival, the HillTop Elf Scavenger Hunt, and Carriages and Carolers.

Architectural home styles vary from Tudor and colonial to custom-built modern homes and larger estates. Located in the Carter House, the city’s oldest home (built in 1741), the Summit Historical Society preserves records, documents, books and artifacts related to the city.

Summit’s walkable historic downtown district is lined with specialty food and jewelry shops, stationery and toy stores, and restaurants for every occasion. East of the train station, the Village Green is a fabulous spot to get some fresh air or catch a movie or concert.

The arts play a big role in the city, with the Summit Playhouse community theatre, which was founded in 1918, and the Dreamcatcher Repertory Theatre being just two of many cultural options. Residents can also catch a contemporary art exhibit or take a class at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey. Or enjoy a live performance by the Summit Symphony Orchestra.
Sports and outdoor enthusiasts can choose from the Summit Municipal Golf Course, the seasonal aquatic center, recreation centers, town pool and team sports that include lacrosse and hockey.

Since as far back as the early 1900s, Summit has offered many quality parks, playgrounds and recreational facilities. Connect with nature at the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, 70-acre Hidden Valley Park, 30-acre Briant Park or Watchung Reservation.
